Under various names and guises, Jim &Foetus& Thirwell has been creating and disseminating his various aural demons in the industrial and noise underground since the very early '80s. As an outfit, Foetus has always assumed different names -- Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel, Foetus Interruptus, and so on -- but the sound has remained essentially the same spiky, abrasive, treble-soaked industrial attack, and a rather unremitting one. True enough, while most of Foetus' output has been created synthetically, using a variety of sound sources, Thirwell's occasional forays into more organic couplings has resulted in a different aesthetic altogether -- see, for instance, the live album Male, or certain tracks from Gash. Boil collects live tracks from the European leg of the Gash tour, with a complete live band, including drummer Jim Kimball, formerly of the Laughing Hyenas, and Kurt Wolf, who had played with Loudspeaker. Like Male, Boil is an exercise in reconfiguring the electronic versions of Foetus material and discovering their nature as material suitable for a live band. A better album sonically than Male, Boil also contains versions of Alice Cooper's &Elected,& the Beatles' &I Am the Walrus,& the Dead Boys' &Sonic Reducer,& and Cheap Trick's &Hello There.&
