Read About This Recording
During 1935-46, the years of the Swing Era, there were so many big bands heard all over the United States that their number can only be estimated. Teenagers and young people loved to dance to the big bands which were also prolifically recorded and a constant on the radio. Swing was impossible to escape, whether it was the jazz-oriented big bands, the sweet orchestras or the vocalists. It was a unique time in that the singers were usually heard with big bands, with the orchestras getting top billing.
On this particular three-CD set from the Reader's Digest series Songs That Won the War, there is quite a bit of variety. Featured are Helen Forrest ("I've Heard that Song Before" and "They Say"), Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra (with Harry James), Connie Haines, Gene Krupa, Duke Ellington ("St. Louis Blues" and "Take the A Train"), Peggy Lee, Woody Herman, Harry James, Jo Stafford, Jan Garber, Patti Page, Guy Lombardo, Artie Shaw, Bob Crosby ("What's New"), Larry Clinton ("The Dipsy Doodle"), Carmen Cavallaro, Eddy Howard and Doris Day with Les Brown.
Swing fans and those who wonder what all of the fuss was about will find much to enjoy on this fun compilation.
