Not since Manchester, England’s early-'90s heyday have indie rock and electronic music blended together so seamlessly and coolly. XO—the 2012 EP by the Vancouver, B.C., duo Bear Mountain—suggests that Ian Bevis' and Kyle Statham's record collections are equally balanced with guitar sounds and computer music. “Two Step” opens by making good on its name as pounding beats are accompanied by scuzzy synthesizer distortion, crunchy guitars, and uplifting vocal samples. The following “Survive” plays with a contrasting crystalline fidelity, as shimmering keyboard parts accompany soulful singing and techno flourishes over what sounds like a live drum kit and bass guitar. Dipping into vestiges of early-'90s house, “Swim” is a festive throwback jam with bygone synth tones and electric piano loops. Easily the most fun tune here, it nostalgically harks back to the days of oversized trousers and cartoonish felt hats peppering the dance floors of warehouse parties. “Sing” similarly flashes back to those disco-dappled days when neon-clad club kids would end up on Geraldo. “Congo” closes the EP sounding like the sons of Fine Young Cannibals.
